Do what is most important. Take action. Stay focused on critical priorities. Communicate often. Maintain control. Stay calm.
Quite frankly, this is the way a leader should operate at all times. A related perspective is the understanding that “Rome is always burning”, it is just a matter of whether or not you realize it. Great leadership is always vigilant of severe downside risk and knows that it is often unimaginable. Unpredictable and unimaginable. The bottom line for a leader in crisis is liquidity, optionality, moral courage and learning. We may feel powerless in the face of uncontrollable circumstances. We may feel angry at what feels like injustice. We may feel guilty that we have let people down. But the learning is profound, and it will be different for all of us.
